We use phrases like "User Interface" and "User Experience." These terms are supposed to convey the idea that we are keeping people at the center of our software process but often this isn't true enough.
Words that are used far less in a design include Art, Beauty, Delight & Joy. Designs should be usable but they must also be artistic. Only through art can we make create something that people care about.
Many aspects of design are utilitarian and purely made to be functional. There's nothing wrong with this but don't pretend that it's creating an experience. Great design should delight, surprise and evoke a human emotion, ideally not frustration or anger.
